Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Do you have questions about osteopathy or are you curious about what to expect from treatment? Below you will find answers to the most frequently asked questions. Is your question not listed? Please feel free to contact us.

How many osteopathic treatments are needed on average?

On average, 2 to 5 osteopathic treatments are required, depending on the symptoms. After 3 treatments, there should be an improvement in the symptoms. A single treatment can also be effective.

How long does a treatment take?

An initial consultation and follow-up treatments last 30 and 40 minutes respectively.

What should I wear during treatment?

Women are advised to wear/bring cotton yoga trousers and a cotton top.

What exactly does an osteopath do?

An osteopath examines and treats loss of movement in the body. Using manual techniques, the osteopath helps to restore balance in the body, which can reduce or eliminate symptoms.

Do I need a referral from my GP?

No, a referral is not necessary. You can make an appointment with an osteopath directly.

What complaints can I see an osteopath for?

You can come to us for various complaints such as back and neck pain, headaches, abdominal pain, sports injuries, stress-related complaints and complaints in babies such as reflux or preferred posture. See also the page “Who is osteopathy for?”.

Does treatment hurt?

In general, osteopathic treatment is not painful. Our techniques are usually gentle. Sometimes you may experience brief fatigue or muscle pain after treatment.

Is osteopathy covered by my health insurance?

Osteopathy is usually (partially) covered by supplementary insurance. It does not count towards your excess. Consult your policy for the exact coverage.

Can I continue working or exercising after treatment?

In most cases, yes. Sometimes we recommend allowing the body to rest for a while after treatment. This depends on the nature of the symptoms.

What is the difference between an osteopath, physiotherapist and chiropractor?

An osteopath takes a holistic view of the entire body: bones, muscles, organs and nerves. A physiotherapist often focuses on the musculoskeletal system, while a chiropractor focuses more on the spine.

Can osteopathy help with stress or fatigue?

Yes, osteopathy can help the body relax better and support its self-healing capacity. In cases of stress or chronic fatigue, treatment can help calm the nervous system.

Are there any risks associated with osteopathy?

Osteopathy is a safe form of treatment, provided it is performed by a qualified osteopath. Any side effects are usually mild and short-lived, such as slight muscle pain or fatigue.

Reviews

“I had a nagging pain in my back for a while. Sessions with my physiotherapist had little effect and it kept coming back. This osteopath/Jop has a very relaxed approach and I felt very at ease. But more importantly, I no longer have any complaints and can carry heavy loads again!”
